REWMOS Project Preliminary Phase
Workshops: The purpose of a stakeholder workshop is to discuss the issues related to electronic waste from off-grid solar products, best practices for disposal/recycling at the end of their lifespan. To Identify a viable business model that can bring all stakeholders together that is attractive to the end user, viable for retailers, wholesalers, manufacturers, and practical for recycling. The workshop will take a form that is an interactive learning and exchange forum, with the opportunity and expectation that all participants actively contribute to the discussion.
Surveys: Solibrium-Solar has conducted surveys which include all types of stakeholders involved in the solar home system waste process. Surveys conducted are critical for gaining information to understanding the waste management process from start to finish.
Life Cycle Analysis: Solar home system components functionality expires at some point in its life time. Solibrium-Solar has done extensive research to figure out the average life span of each component, the materials that make up each component and the process in which the material can be reused or recycled. This research is critical in estimating the amount of waste that needs to be directed to specific facilities, and the most efficient process in which this waste can be managed.
Outreach Activities/Awareness Creation:A critical component in any waste management program is public awareness and participation, in addition to appropriate legislation, strong technical support, and adequate funding. Solar waste is described as discarded solar electronic devices or appliances that have ceased to be of any value to their owners. The project aims to reduce the negative environmental impacts of SHS at the end of their lifespan and increase the value associated with owning a SHS for the end-user. All this is achievable by creating awareness and sensitization.REWMOS project is creating awareness of a life cycle support system through education on the proper usage, repairs of systems, take back programs and disposal of solar home systems.
